End of the Year Gear Review - 2021

It’s a new year and I want to give a shout out to some really awesome gear, tackle, and equipment I used in 2021. For those of you looking to make some additions or upgrades to your gear hopefully this helps you out. Before you dive in, I think it helps to know that my gear philosophy is something like, “keep it simple stupid” and “buy nice or buy twice” but don’t blow money needlessly.

Simms CX Fishing Bibs and CX Jacket

Simms CX Bibs and Jackets are an absolute game changer for on the water comfort. They completely block the wind and water, fit great, are built to last, and they have all the right pockets and zippers. If you’re like me and fish cold and/or rainy days, do yourself a huge favor and invest in a pair of these bibs!

Fishpond Face Stick and Lip Balm

As a ginger who lives on the water I have real incentives for minimizing my risk of skin cancer. To protect my face, lips, and hands, I have come to love Fishpond’s face stick and lip balm products. Four reasons I love these products are: They actually keep me from burning, they don’t accidentally get into and burn your eyes, the face stick is skin tone colored so I don’t look like a ghost, and the pocket sticks are always in my pocket making them extremely convenient to apply.

Marsh Wear Escape Pants

These pants are the best balance of breathability, durability, and comfort while also looking great. I’ve pretty much replaced all of of my fishing pants with these pants. Honestly, I’ve replaced my around town pants with these, too.

Fish Pond Mid Length Boat Net

I finally quit buying the disposable Walmart nets and got a net that is built to last. I’m really enjoying the rubber netting and feel of my Fishpond net! Fishpond also makes a great lineup of trout nets that is worth checking out.

Umpqua X Series XS 410 NI5X All Purpose Hooks

When I’m looking for hooks to tie flies with, I want strength, point retention, rust resistance, and a design that gets fish hooked consistently. The Umpqua XS 410 hooks are the best I’ve found to fit this criteria. The classic straight shank design works great for tying most flies as well.

New Moon Upholstery Boat Cushions

My New Moon boat cushions have seen 350+ days of water use over the last year and a half and they still look and feel new. Cass at New Moon Upholstery makes incredible boat cushions with top quality materials.

Tibor Fly Reels

I’ve been using Tabor’s everglades and riptide reels on my fly rods. These reels are enjoyable to use and built to be passed on to your grandkids. What more could you ask for?

Danco Premio Titanium Pliers

I’ve reviewed these before but the more I use them the more I like them. These pliers as super durable and by far the best value for the money that I have seen.

Thank you for taking the time to read this review. I’m excited to see what 2022 brings and I look forward to giving another update in the future.
